Where's The Nearest McDonalds?

Astronauts don't have the option of grabbing something to eat while in outer space. Their food has always been of concern. One of the favorite foods of the astronauts is "mac and cheese" stored in a shrink-wrapped brick. According to NASA, this is the comfort food they crave most. But when they blast off for Mars in 2030, this won't be available as the see-through package traps moisture and oxygen so it would spoil before eaten.

The manager of NASA's advanced food technology says this is one of the issues she and her staff of 15 have to consider when they make up menus for missions.. The menu needs to be light and nutritious, tasty and durable enough to withstand the years-long mission to Mars.

Missions of that length have enough food for 6,759 breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks (enough food to feed 6 people for more than 3 years). Each person is allowed 3.2 pounds of food per day with each dish needing a five year shelf life.

As space missions got longer over the years, NASA moved away from the toothpaste like containers that held vegetable purees. Meals began to resemble real food: dehydrated sausage patties, fruit cocktail and spaghetti with meat sauce.

Today, food on missions includes freeze-dried shrimp, beef fajitas and cherry-blueberry cobbler.

Buying A New Car?

As a single woman, I'm always interested in web sites that can help me make important decisions. Other than buying a home, purchasing an automobile is one of the most important purchases in a person's life. Safety and dependability are two of the main things I look for and research before buying a vehicle. Transportation has to be reasonably priced and have basic options before I consider them. I found and excellent web site: TheCarConnection.com.

One of the best values I found was a Chevrolet Malibu. It's a strong performing car with good fuel economy, is an excellent ride with comfortable seats and has high crash test results. For 2010, there were very minor changes. The six-speed automatic transmission is now standard on all but the base model which helps improve fuel economy. At TheCarConnection.com, I was able to find out the pros and cars on this specific model with reviews and other valuable info.

While at this site I looked for information on other makes and models and found interesting facts and information about Mercedes Benz cl-class. One of the side facts I learned was that an open-top, dark blue Mercedes-Benz owned by Adolph Hitler was sold to an anonymous Russian billionaire for several million dollars. It was on display for awhile at a Las Vegas car museum.

The Suzuki sx4 is another automobile with many features and options and has received raves about it's interior. After looking at a few different cars and their options and reviews, I decided to look up the history of automobiles in Wikipedia and found out the background of many cars. Wiki cars was interesting reading and noted that Ferdinand Verbiest, a Jesuit in China, built the first steam powered vehicle around 1672. Reading the history of the automobile industry was fascinating.

Be Eco-Friendly: Conserve

Water is something that's been taken for granted ever since the time of the first man. We all assumed it would be there whenever we wanted. Not True. We should all have a rain water barrel as this is the easiest way to conserve water. In a post I did on 5/17/09. I addressed the issue of the shrinking rain forests. They used to cover 14% of the earth's surface and now only cover 6%. This is a scary fact as information like this has only been tracked for the last few decades. Many aspects of our lives are dependant of the activity of the rain forests.

I've also addressed the issue of composting in posts I did on 8/27/09 and 10/21/09. Again, this is one of the easiest ways to help the environment. It used to be a very messy and smelly process years ago. Today, there are pieces of equipment that can be purchased very inexpensively to assist in having a more sanitary composting process. In one of the composting posts, I mentioned Leonardo DiCaprio's commitment to the "go green" movement and how he included living green in as many phases of life that he can. I'm sure that he incorporates the use of a rain barrel as part of his involvement. A 8/6/09 post was on eco-friendly packaging materials. A good percentage of the materials were made from recycled materials.

I remember visiting my grandparents when I was little. They made use of rain barrels decades ago. Part of the reason they saved water was due the hard economic times they grew up in and part was due to the fact that clothes washed in rain water kept them very soft. My grandmother also used the rain water to wash her hair. It always smelled good and was very soft to the touch. Her barrel was very different from the ones that are out today. She had the old wooden barrel with the metal staves. It was very tall and always covered to keep debris out.

Fashion, Pollution or BPA?

BE WARY!!! Some of the aluminium bottles that look so fashionable may contain the contaminant BPA.

The plastic bottle industry consumed 8.82 billion gallons of water in 2007 worth $11.7 billion. The United States market for bottled water is the largest in the world. Then information started to come out that plastic bottles were not biodegradable and used vast amounts of oil to produce.

In many plastic bottles the chemical bisphenol A or BPA leached from the bottles. It has been linked to cancer, neurological problems and reproductive disorders. Many switched to a reusable aluminium water bottles made by the Swiss company SIGG. Recently, the CEO of SIGG had to admit that prior to August 2008, the liners of the bottles did contain BPA.

The original SIGG liner inside has a shiny copper bronze finish. The new BPA free liners have a dull, yellow coating.

A-tisket A-tasket

A-tisket a-tasket
A green-and-yellow basket
I bought a basket for my mommie
On the way I dropped it

I dropped it, I dropped it
Yes, on the way I dropped it
A little girlie picked it up
And took it to the market

Recently, I was looking to possibly buy a picnic basket as I wanted to do something different and picnics are one of the things I haven't done in years. The song, "A-tisket A-tasket" popped into my mind and it was hard to get it out. Written and sung by Ella Fitzgerald in 1938, it was and still is a popular school bus children's song. It is any easy song to learn due to the pattern of the words. It's a song about a green and yellow basket. I tried to look up the words tisket and tasket but couldn't find them anywhere. Even Wikipedia was no help and they can usually find an answer to virtually any query. This time I struck out.

What really surprised me is the fabulous selection of picnic baskets that are out there. I'm still in the dark ages of thinking picnic baskets are made of basic straw with no frills that you place your plastic containers in (usually of the used Cool Whip type). Boy, was I wrong! The times have certainly changed. You can buy baskets for certain types of food. Baskets for wines or wine and cheese together are available and I learned that if you're eating a hard cheese, red wine should be the choice of what to drink. Soft cheeses call for white wine. I never knew that wines are based on the type of cheese eaten. I had only heard of wines associated with meat and fish.

A gourmet picnic basket or traditional basket is available to fit every one's taste and budget. Basic backpack picnic baskets are all the rage as are children's baskets. Baskets are designed to meet people's needs not only for form but for function also. Made from hand-woven willow and polyester canvas, today's picnic baskets will last for years. The food compartments are insulated, with melamine or ceramic dishes as well as cotton linens, stainless steel silverware and cutting boards all add to the user's enjoyment. Not only are today's picnic baskets convenient, they are made of high quality. I guess it's time for me to "get with the program" when it comes to having a picnic.

Lockers Are More Than They Used To Be

Hard to believe that this is a picture of a set of lockers isn't it? These wood lockers are what you might find at an upscale golf or yacht club. The wood grain and hi-tech design gives them a very rich look and they are easy to maintain.

Remember your old gym locker? You'd throw your stinky socks and smelly uniform into it and hope you'd remember to take them home for your mother to wash before your next practice. Most of the time, you forgot to do that, so they were really ripe the next time you put them back on. With vented school lockers, some of this problem was avoided but your clothes were still nasty. The problem wasn't with the locker, it was temporary memory loss that caused this. You probably wanted to put the whole room of lockers for sale and start all over again with new ones.

Your locker was your own personal area and you'd decorate it with whatever was the trend at the time. If it had a combination lock, you'd usually mess up when you were in a hurry to throw a book into it and grab the one for the next class.

This is How I Enjoy The Holidays

The Dreaded "C" Word

In June 1997, Paul Kraus heard the dreaded word mesothelioma. Cancer in any form is always a very scary word and is usually a death sentence. Paul was given only a few months to live. After the initial shock wore off, Paul and his family decided to "fight the good fight". After doing extensive research on mesothelioma cancer, knowing he did not want chemotherapy, surgery or radiation, he learning about alternative treatments. Paul and his doctors worked to create his own regimen to heal him.

Twelve years later, he has regained an excellent quality of life. Wanting to pass on his knowledge to others, Paul wrote "Surviving Mesothelioma and Other Cancers: A Patient's Guide". His book is currently the best selling mesothelioma book in the world. To help others rally against their mesothelioma asbestos diagnosis, a free copy of Paul Kraus's book is available to patients who have been newly diagnosed with mesothelioma.

A mesothelioma prognosis can be positive when a person is open to all forms of treatment and therapy and is willing to investigate and commit to one that will give positive results.

Sounds

I enjoy sounds: rain hitting the roof, crickets chirping on a warm summer night, the sound of a warm crackling fire, wind chimes blowing gently in the breeze (see 9/30/09 post), clothes tumbling in a dryer, the sound of cardinals and many others.

Another sound that people usually don't think of as gentle is that of a gong. They have been around for centuries and have served many purposes. It's assumed that gongs originated in China in the 6th century and were used for ceremonial functions, to announce when the Emperor was coming, for important religious and military figures and to gather men for battle. Gongs then migrated to Java and Africa and arrived in Europe in the 9th century. Two types of gongs are the suspended kind usually suspended from a stand and bowl gongs which rest on cushions. They can be made from many materials including wood and metal.

Gongs are used for many purposes in today's culture. German radio uses the gong sound to tell the exact time. The group Aerosmith uses a gong at the end of their song "Dream On". In the television series The Adams Family, they would summon the family butler Lurch by banging a gong. In concert, Pink Floyd ended their song " Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" by having a gong burst into flames. The flashing traffic signal at railroad crossings is triggered by a warning bell (also known as a gong).

A meditation gong plays a major role in the meditation practice especially within the Buddhist culture. The term"invited" is used when a gong sound is made (never "hit" or "strike"). The harmony between a gong and person into a contemplative experience that will guide the believer toward Nirvana and Buddahood. Tibetan and Buddhist sound gongs for festivals, individual meditation and calls to worship.

Outdoor devotees will love The North Face brand of clothing, footwear and other products which were designed and manufactured by two hiking enthusiasts in the mid '60's. I Love Flowers !!!

Plain and simple: I love flowers. I recently got back from a week in Hawaii. The flowers that we pay lots of money for in the states grow like weeds there. My favorite flower is the orchid and I found them everywhere. Growing by the roadsides, the orchids grew in fantastic colors. The residents think of them as weeds and are constantly trying to get rid of them as some varieties can choke out other forms of vegetation. After I got home and re-checked the price of orchids, I started to think about possibly getting a garden greenhouse and finding out how to grow my own.

Orchids date back to the early ages. In Greek history they were associated with virility. Over the years, orchids have been a symbol of love, luxury and beauty. During the Middle Ages, they were used as a remedy for many illnesses. They have also been considered as an aphrodisiac and were the main ingredient in many love portions. In the 18th century, orchids were considered the flower of the wealthy. In the 19th century, whole areas in England were stripped bare after the orchids were sold with no regard towards conservation. Today, most orchids that are grow for sale are done with plants from greenhouse growing.

In my search on the internet for garden greenhouses, I found a wonderful web site that has what I'm looking for in price and design. Outdora carries greenhouses made from utra strong materials such as indestructible polycarbonate walls and rust-proof aluminium frames. These greenhouses can withstand many years of inclement weather. The shape and design offer a great selection to fit your needs and backyard space. Some are onion shaped and others come in the more traditional styles. Windows, adjustable metal hooks, movable hangers, shade cloths, seed trays and more can be custom styled for your personal use. Their line of hobby greenhouse kits are easy to assemble. Some have a slide-together channel assembly and others are a push-fit design.

The Return of Pooh

The first authorized sequel to A.A. Milne's classic fairy tail is now available. It is titled "The Return to the Hundred Acre Wood" written by author David Benedict. The story picks up the where Milne's "The House at Pooh Corner" first published in 1928, left off.

Many avid Pooh fans felt there was no need for a new book saying Milne's book should stand alone. But the Trustees of Pooh Properties, which manages the estate of Milne and illustrator E.H. Shepard have long wanted to carry on with the book. When the trustees read an early version of Benedict's book that they felt that there was an appropriate successor to the original.

This is the classic-looking Pooh and illustrator Mark Burgess makes Christopher a little older. Piglet has his traditional green outfit and Pooh is still the same weight.

Lottie the Otter is an new addition. She is strict about etiquette and is a fan of the English game of cricket.

Safety First

As a single woman, I am always concerned about issues of safety. Did I lock the house doors when I left ? Did I leave any windows open? Once I'm inside, am I safe from what may be outside? I decided to check into a home security system and the one that came immediately to mind was ADT as I had seen it advertised on TV and a couple of my friends have it and recommended it highly.

As the #1 home alarm company, ADT has an impeccable reputation for their 24/7 customer monitoring. Also, they were named "Best Buy" by Consumer Digest and have packages for less than $1 a day.

Their wireless security system offers the same service and response time as the older hard-wired systems. As they are wireless, it's easy to add or relocate the monitoring sensors. A added feature is that the wireless system can be used to control lights, garage doors and some appliances within the home. Their 2 way voice option requires a land line telephone so that you can speak to the monitoring center from any room.

There is no question; ADT is the security system for me.

What Do I Do With This Flame?

Fires and flames have been around for centuries. Early man didn't know anything about fire other than sometimes natural sources produced something that was very bright, sometimes hard to control and produced something that was later called heat. Early cave pictures show fire in man's art and there are many legends surrounding fire. Some thought it was stolen from the gods. Once early man understood a little about fire, he had to learn how to control and preserve it. Fire needed watching so it wouldn't go out or spread. The early people were like families today in that they gathered around the fire as a central part of their lives. Advances over the years led to fire being contained in objects such as fire pit tables.

These tables come in various types and styles as can be seen in the photo at the left. You can enjoy a meal around your fire pit table. Some of the tables are elevated bar-stool types and look fabulous in outdoor living spaces. As in the days of the cavemen, families once again can gather around the fire for companionship and socializing and even cooking. Some of the tables are gas fueled and lower tables that are wood burning allow you to warm your toes by the fire.

Fire pit tables are movable so they don't need to stay in one outdoor space. You can take them camping, use them for tailgating or take them to the beach. Made from materials such as masonry, wrought iron and stainless steel, you can match any decor or be eclectic in your choices. Easy clean-up tops from slate or granite have a long lasting finish. A beautiful glow is produced from gas logs or tumbled fire glass.

Is A Viking A Person Or A Grill?

The earliest history of Vikings is traced back as early as the 790's. From then until 1066, it was commonly called "the Viking Age of Scandinavian history". According to Wikipedia, Vikings lead the way in expansion to what is now Iceland, Greenland, Shetland and a short-lived settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows. Some of these lands were discovered by Vikings who had been blown off course. Others were discovered by sailors on the ships who had seen land ahead. The Greenland settlement eventually died out. There is evidence that the Vikings reached Baghdad, the center of the Islamic Empire. They regularly sailed on the Volga River to trade furs, tusks and seal fat. In return they wanted slaves. This race of people never heard of Viking Grills. Their food was eaten raw or cooked over an open flame.

Now, this brings us to the Minnesota Vikings who received their official name on September 27, 1960 in honor of Minnesota's place as the center of Scandinavia American culture . They were and still are an energetic team with a stadium capacity of 47,900 seats. Their first pick in the 1961 draft was Fran Tarkenton from the University of Georgia. The most notable name in Viking history is quarterback Brett Farve who made history with the Green Bay Packers. Deciding retirement was not for him, Favre ended up with the Minnesota Vikings. Having access to the good life, the team probably knows about and uses Viking Grills.

These grills, which are top of the line, come in many sizes with many features and accessories. The Viking Grill is the world's first heavy duty commercial type range for the home. With 29,000 BTU burners, a rotisserie rod and basket with a ball bearing support for smooth rotation, this grill will last a lifetime. There are many accessories that can be purchased to further escalate the value of the grill including racks and drip pans, a grill wok grate, and lid sets, hoods, vent kits and barbecue grill sets. You'll more than get your money's worth with this grill.
